Our skin is exposed to daily dust, dirt and pollution so cleansing, toning, and moisturising is important to remove toxins and keep your skin clean. Doing this routine for 10 minutes in the morning and the same in the evening will also prevent early signs of aging, acne and many other skin problems and make your skin more radiant.

Step 1 - Cleanse

Cleansing removes dirt and residue from your skin, it helps with skin renewal and boosts skin health. Your skin is exposed to the sun and pollutants and failure to have a skin care regime can lead to clogged pores, in turn it can make your skin dull and lead to breakouts.

There are many types of cleansers on the market it is down to personal preference which type you prefer.

1. Foam Cleansers – If you have oily or combination skin then a foam cleanser is ideal for you. It is lightweight and it helps remove excess oil, dirt and cleans without stripping the skin.

2. Gel Cleansers – Another great option if you have oily or acne prone skin. They have soothing qualities, reduce redness and irritation. Perfect for not only fighting acne but preventing it as well.

3. Oil Based Cleansers – Is suitable for all skin types, however first cleanse with an oil based to remove any dirt and makeup, then follow up with another type of cleanser that suits your skin.

4. Micellar Water – This is made up of using purified water, glycerine and mild surfactants. It is suitable for all skin types. It is highly effective at removing dirt, makeup, and excess oil. Micellar water does not need to be rinsed off.

5. Cleansing Lotion – Deep cleansing is suitable for sensitive skin it is oil fighting which cleanses deep into the pores to help prevent spots without irritating your skin.

6. Cleansing Balm – This is great for removing stubborn impurities in your pores and is suitable for all skin types.

7. Cleansing Bar – As well as cleansing this deeply moisturises dry to very dry skin types without stripping the natural oils.

Whichever cleansing option you use follow the directions on the packaging for optimal results. The massage action should always be used while cleansing, it helps bring fresh blood flow to the surface of the skin, making it look more radiant and healthy. If your skin feels squeaky clean and tight after cleansing, this is a sign that the product you are using may be too rough for your skin. The cleanser you choose depends on your preferences and the condition of your skin. Therefore, always choose a cleanser according to your skin type.

Step 2 - Toning

Toning helps remove any remaining dirt despite cleansing. It deep cleanses the skin and eliminates dead skin cells that may lead to unwanted breakouts. It reduces the size of the pores, and provides hydration to you skin. Toning is important for your daily skincare routine, because toners also lower the skin’s pH level, calms the skin, and helps prepare it for any moisturisers or serums that will follow.

Toners are water based formulations that are used to amplify cleansing.

Several types of Toners:

1. Hydrating Toners – Are suitable for all skin types. These are the gentlest facial toners that contain hyaluronic acid or glycerin. It gives the skin a quick boost of hydration and refreshment. Please note they do not take away any extra dirt or residue on the skin they just add a layer of hydration.

2. Exfoliating Toners – These types of toners usually contain hydroxy acid or fruit enzymes. The most popular types of exfoliating toners are glycolic acid toners and salicylic acid toners. Exfoliating toners enhance cleansing significantly, but are more suitable for normal, combination and oily skin types, because they can be irritating for dry and sensitive skin.

3. Treatment Toners – These are more intended to solve specific skin problems. They do more than hydrate the skin because they contain active ingredients. A brightening toner for example would have vitamin c to help remove discolorations. A soothing toner would have plant extracts like chamomile or aloe to help with irritation and redness on the skin. Depending on the active ingredients treatment toners are suitable for all skin types to target skin concerns like excess oil, enlarged pores, scarring or sensitivity.

Whichever toner you decide is best for you, always follow the directions on the packaging.

Step 3 - Moisturising

The last step of your routine is to moisturise. Our skin is the body’s largest organ and needs regular attention to stay blemish-free, and healthy. Cleansing and toning open the pores of the skin leaving it bare. The skin loses its moisture, so it is very important to put moisture back into the skin. Daily moisturising can reduce the chance of developing dry skin or oily skin. Both extremes are harmful to the skin and cause common skin conditions like acne. A well-moisturized skin will feel soft, smooth, radiant.

A light moisturizer acts as a bridge between makeup and skin, which maintains the elasticity of the skin.

Types of Moisturisers:

1. Humectants – They draw water from the dermis (deep down skin layer) up to the epidermis (surface layer) where hydration occurs.

2. Emollients – They soften the skin and leave it smooth. It works by filling the gaps between skin cells with hydrating oils and lipids. Emollients work best for those with oily skin.

3. Occlusives – They repel water, they will seal moisture into your skin. Occlusives are heavier and therefore better for drier skin.

Always make time and give your skin the attention it deserves!
